Nordtveit: - Great to show that I too can play good football
LONDON: It hasn’t always gone well for Håvard Nordtveit (24) at the Norwegian national team. After the solid match against England last week, he was pretty much a relieved man.
“I feel that some weight has been lifted off my shoulders, after having shown people what I’m good for,” Nordtveit says to VG.
Together with Vegard Forren, the 24 year old made a solid performance as central defenders against the English stars last Wednesday.
The back four didn’t let the home team get many chances, and England needed a penalty in the end to decide the match, which ended 1-0.
SHOWED THAT HE COULD
The 24 year old plays regularly for Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he gets a lot of trust and play time. This season, Nordtveit and his club have opened with two draws, with the Norwegian as one of the most outstanding players.
“At the club, this is not a problem. I know what I’m good for. At the national team however, I haven’t had that many good matches,” he says.
Therefore, the relief was huge for the 24 year old when the referee Jorge Sousa blew the whistle on Wembley on Wednesday, and Nordtveit could thank the Englishmen for the match and stroll in the dressing room.
“It was great to show people that I too can play good football,” he concludes.
NORWAY’S NEXT CENTRAL DEFENCE PAIR
Nordtveit’s effort through 90 minutes against England was awarded with the grade 6 from VG. His colleague in the central defense, Forren, got the same.
“Forren and I work great together. We blocked quite a few shots and stood compact,” Nordtveit concludes.
Who should make up Norway’s central defense against England, was a debated subject before the friendly match. Eventually Nordtveit, who plays in the central midfield at Mönchengladbach, pulled down in the position.
Naturally, the team against Italy hasn’t been taken out yet, but everything speaks for Forren/Nordtveit as Høgmo’s choice in the central defense once more. The 24 year old believes that this could be a permanent solution.
Do you see the England match as a good application to make up Norway’s central defense together with Forren?
“Absolutely. It’s fun to show oneself against good strikers, strikers that are world class. Vegard and I were very motivated. But we can’t be satisfied now, after all, it’s the Italy match that is important. England was just a test," he says. "Now we have to get back down on the earth again and bring this good feeling with against Italy.”
